What is depression?
Feeling sad, hopeless, flat, and low, accompanied by the lack of energy, withdrawal from social situations, and negative thoughts are uncomfortable. But they are normal feelings if they only happen from time to time. However, if these feelings persist, increase in severity, and happen regularly for longer periods which affects your daily functioning, then you might already be suffering from depression.
Depression is often caused by a number of factors. Several studies have suggested that vulnerability to depression can be heightened by stressful life events. On the other hand, it is also true that depression can be experienced even without events that trigger it. Your vulnerability to depression can be determined by a lot of factors. These factors include genetics, personality, family history, use of drugs and alcohol, physical health, relationships and the like.
Depression has the ability to consume all your energy and make you feel hopeless resulting to making you feel alone. However, you are not actually alone. Depression is a common mental illness that is experienced by many Australians and despite the feeling of hopelessness, there is help.
What are treatments for depression?
Engaging actively in treatment has proven to reduce symptoms of depression. Psychological treatments for depression include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) interpersonal therapy (IPT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBTC). Therapies aid us in challenging the truthfulness of our thoughts. Further, they help us in creating less reactive cognitive patterns, allow the creation of new habits, and strengthen our relationships. In turn, they alter our mood and mental state. Like in anxiety disorders, CBT is also the most well-known and most practiced therapy when it comes to dealing with depression.
Medical treatments for depression may involve prescriptions of medical intervention such as antidepressants. They are usually paired with psychotherapy. In addition, there are several complimentary lifestyle changes that may help in treating depression. These include yoga, exercise, light therapy, relaxation training, peer-support interventions, bibliotherapy, and various herbs.
