Do I need a referral before I can book a session?

No, you do not need a referral, however, if you are eligible to claim through Medicare, then a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist is required.

You are now entitled for a Medicare rebate of $89.65 in your face to face and online psychology sessions under the “Better access to mental health initiative for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.” Please make an appointment with your GP who will then complete a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and you will then need to bring your MHCP to your first appointment. You can find more information about Medicare rebates from Medicare Australia on 132-011 or by visiting www.medicareaustralia.gov.au.

Can I claim fees from my health fund for my face to face or online psychology sessions?

Most private health funds will provide a rebate for psychological services even when they are done online. However, this depends on your level of cover. To find out more, please contact your health fund.

Please note: You are not able to claim from Medicare and your private health fund for the same session.

What makes a Registered Psychologist different from Psycholotherapists and Counsellors?

In Australia, the restricted title and registered profession of Psychology is under the protection and supervision of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Furthermore, the Psychology Board of Australia holds general registration of all psychologists. They are the ones making sure that Australian psychologists meet high standards in education, training, supervised practice. In addition, they require that psychologists should maintain the required ethical and professional standards, and continuous professional development.

On the other hand, Psychotherapists and Counsellors are not legally regulated titles in Australia. The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) are the ones regulating them.
